It is hard for the medical field to tell us why some people with Classic Galactosemia do better than others. It was thought that a diet exempt of Galactose/Lactose/Milk and other ingredients high in galactose (such as Garbanzo bean's and so on...) was suppose to lessen the severity of complications with Galactosemia. As a parent of a Galactosemic child that has not allowed any of these ingredients, I know that each child is affected differently. Each child will have a different outcome. It could have to do with the numerous gene variants of Galactosemia. It is my opinion that the "classic Galactosemia" label should only be given to the children affected with 2 q188r gene's that result in very little to NO enzyme activity at all.
Children affected by Classic Galactosemia will need to be closely monitored for many complications in many areas to assure the best possible outcome or Quality of Life. Examples: Development, cognitive, fine and gross motor, speech and language issues, social aspects, neurological issues and so on etc...
If you are a Parent of a Galactosemic child make sure your child has a Metabolic team and Doctor to follow them every step of the way. Many other doctor's in other fields as well that I will get into at a later time.
Very important to have a Very close Friend or Family member that will learn about the diet and all aspects. It is important for the Family of a Galactosemic child to feel they have Support and understanding in all areas. I know it all to well that many people will take on a few ingredients off the diet list to be aware of but not many people at all will come to the full understanding of what everyday can bring. Especially if your child is having complications seek out ways of getting extra help once in awhile. More to come later! BUT very important the most important thing a parent can do is be patient and LOVE your child no matter what is going on- they seek acceptance and understanding and should feel 100% good and safe at home!!
